Breast augmentation with implants at our Albuquerque cosmetic surgery practice can dramatically improve the way a woman feels about the size and shape of her breasts. Implants come in many different sizes, shapes, and materials. The type of implant used during breast enhancement surgery is based on each patient’s aesthetic goals, physical features, and the expert opinion of our plastic surgeon, Dr. Miguel Gallegos, MD.
Breast implant size is measured in cubic centimeters (ccs). Higher numbers correspond with larger implants. Dr. Gallegos will help you determine what size implant is best for your physique during a breast enhancement surgery consultation.
Breast implants are available in two shapes: round and teardrop. Round implants come in various profiles and may be appropriate for patients who desire more fullness in the upper portion of their breasts. Teardrop implants, also known as contoured, are designed to mimic the gradual downward slope of natural breasts.
Both saline and silicone breast implants are offered at our Albuquerque practice. Each type of breast implant presents its own set of drawbacks and benefits. Dr. Gallegos can help you select the one best suited for your goals.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are made of a silicone shell that is filled with a saline solution. In the rare event that an implant ruptures, the patient’s body simply absorbs the water. This safety feature makes saline implants a desirable option for many women. A second advantage is that they are filled at the time of surgery to their appropriate size, requiring a smaller incision.
Silicone Breast Implants
The FDA has established that silicone breast implants are safe for use in patients 22 years of age or older. Silicone breast implants are comprised of an outer silicone shell surrounding a soft silicone gel substance. This gel mimics the consistency of breast tissue, making silicone a very natural feeling and looking type of breast implant. Because silicone implants come pre-filled, they require a larger incision compared to their silicone counterparts.
